Hot New Auto Styling Trend IS... 80s Hatchback?
#acwj
Are we seeing a new trend in squared off vehicles, like we had back in the 80s? Ioniq5, VF3, Rivian R3, new Fiat Grande Panda, and more.
Individually, they were cars I love and am excited about, but now I see a new "Retro" trend back to squared off hatchbacks that start to maximize the interior again from the decades of swoopy jelly beans we've endured.

A Far Too Brief History of the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon
Просмотров 6 тыс.9 часов назад
#acwj The Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon debuted in 1978 and continued, largely unchanged, for 13 model years, while spinning off multiple variants including the Charger, Rampage, and Shelby GLH-S's. Unheralded, they challenged the famous K Cars for sales, and are directly responsible for Chrysler earning the government backed loans that saved them from bankruptcy. Be sure to subscribe to our ...

Tesla Dealerships Auto News OpEd Response
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.19 часов назад
#acwj Automotive News had an OpEd today stating the case that Tesla could supercharge their growth by moving to a dealership model. Like any good OpEd (and this one was very well written), there's an element of truth in everything they say. But when you step back and look at the whole picture, it's a terrible idea if you're concerned about the CUSTOMER. So I thought I needed to have a response ...

#acwj This weeks Motorweek Reaction video is the 1987 Jeep Wrangler! I won't pretend to be unbaised about this one - I love the Jeeps of this era and I owned a Wrangler! Crude, harsh, and slow, but a dramatic improvement over the previous CJs, I miss what the base-levels of this Wrangler offered - inexpensive, low, and fun. Why Has Fiat Not Succeeded In America? It Isn't Reliability... It's Prestige
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.14 дней назад
#acwj #fiat Fiat has released their new 500e - a $32k EV with only about 150 miles of range. After years of struggle, why do they continue to not be competitive in the US market? While some argue the easy point that they're just "unreliable", I believe that doesn't matter to the masses of buyers. It's Value, and Fiat doesn't offer it. The older gas-powered 500 was fun, but didn't get great gas ...
A Far Too Brief History of The Dodge Dakota From D50 to The End
Просмотров 7 тыс.14 дней назад
#acwj Struggling from Bankruptcy Dodge once again created a new market for themselves with the midsized truck - the Dodge Dakota. It's story starts long before that, but through 3 distinct generations the Dakota offered near full-sized capabilities in a more manageable size. Ultimately cancelled, Dodge, now RAM, finds itself without a competitor in that market segment. Be sure to subscribe to o...

1998 Lexus GS400 (Reaction) Motorweek Retro
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.21 день назад
#acwj This week's Motorweek Retro Reaction is the 1998 Lexus GS400! Back in the 90's I really liked this car, and it would have been my personal choice in that mid-sized executive sedan category. But it was a swing-and-a-miss for Lexus. While good, it's styling outside and inside left it behind the German's it was chasing. As I say in the video, "it has a nice personality"! Head2Head | Ford v Chevy Lineups

#acwj I consider myself more of a Ford fan, but increasingly I like what Chevy's putting out. So I decided a video evaluating their lineups Head 2 Head was worth it! What I found was 2 manufacturers who no longer compete head to head in every segment, but where each has staked out interesting positions where sometimes there's not a competion. By my tally: Ford 5, Chevy 9. Be sure to subscribe t...

This Op Ed on Hybrids and Climate Annoyed Me (Editorial Rant)

#acwj Automotive News had a guest Op-Ed Thursday breaking down their reasoning on why hybrids have no place in the future auto market when the goal is to meet Paris Agreement climate goals. Further, the undercurrent of the piece was you have choice on how to meet these arbitrar...

A Far Too Brief History of King Midget
Smaller vehicles are more easily able to attain high gas mileage, so this is nonsense.
black white silver gray. They are boring as fuck. Don't back-peddle like an apologist.
I rented a Geo Metro once when on a business trip. All I really remember is the "binary throttle" -- I was either full on or full off lol.
Hatchbacks are nice. I remember being able to move furniture in the back of my 89 CRX that you would think required a pickup or SUV.
Beaten up Altima, or older 3 series BMW haha
Oh, I absolutely think you're seeing the front end of a trend. What will be most interesting to see is if/when the larger automakers (I'm looking at you, Toyota) buy into the idea.
Government is THE problem.
With GM it's almost never about the customer. Zora Duntov and the Corvette customer base wanted a mid engined replacement and it took mgmt only 50 yrs to make it happen!. They cancel the Camaro, a huge mistake due to its importance in the market, and its importance as an everyday hi performance car, and on and on....the lady in charge or her replacement - it doesn't matter, none are car people - is gonna drive the company into the ground or completely lose its relevency which is not too far down the road.
I will make sure to drive any car with an Iron Duke i4 and take it to one of these quiet zones and let everyone hear the amazing sound of crude 80s mechanisms
My 1999 Cadi made it 88k before it went all "Northstar" on me. I still own a Cadillac, But would never buy a Cadi with a Northstar again.
The omni was a k car.
Will squared modern designs affect range or fuel economy. Do EV's need to meet CAFE standards? Perhaps this the reason they are squaring vehicles again...
Beautiful trucks old style more beautiful than new cars made from blastic ❤
Nonsense
This is probably a Ubisoft move, trying to promote selling bundles and boosts. Only way for a F2P game to make any money.
I think the greatest thing which can come from this is the return of visibility. Cars have become so pinched with tiny rear glass and even no back glass in the case of polestar and others that the driver has to rely on electronics which, let’s be honest, will eventually fail. Even if we need thick pillars for rollover protection etc, maybe this is the return of actually being able to see out of cars. In terms of the why, I think this is like the retro turn of the early 2000s which brought us the new mini, beetle, pt cruiser etc. again mostly focused on small, stylish cars which like the VF3, Honda E, Hyundai RN22, are aimed as second cars to those looking for a fashion statement which reminds them of the cool or typical cars of their childhood.
I’m convinced the 1st Gen Escalade was created in 1 week after plagiarizing the already barely different Yukon Denali. I like the grille, but it is the same as the Denali haha.
As a life-long hatchbacker I don't get a lot of "hatchback" vibe from these. To my eyes they're more "mini-SUV". And yes the bulbous center console and dashboard stuff needs to die so we can have our interior space back in the front!
I'm truly tired of the term "SUV." Someone made it up and now we can't seem to get rid of it. Let's face it, they are a hatchback by function. And yes Jon, I see your point about un-jelly-beaning; I like it and look forward to car makers differentiating their products with appearance as part of the whole effort. Thanks!
American Yugo?
I remember renting one of these for a month in 1984 when my Accord was in the shop. I thought the Horizon wasn’t bad at all. But I wanted my Accord back.
Best warranty is one you don't need to use..
I remember some models had the 1.6 VW engine. Same as the Pennsylvania built Rabbit.
The AURA, OUTLOOK & SKY rolled out in summer of 2006.
SATURN AURA - not aurora
I agree it is a trend and I also love it. The ionic five and the Rivian are definitely the best looking of the bunch but they are all good looking. I’ve never been a fan of melted soap cars.
Not to deviate from the subject at hand, but I read the book behind you , Iacocca , many years ago. Good book for anyone interesting in forward thinking.
I love 80s styling and cybertruck is my dreamcar
I had a red geo metro 5speed 3cylinder I loved it it was quick nimble and 40mpg great
All of the 80s with all of the cheese 🧀
I agree with your final thoughts of Isuzu, and hope one day I stumble upon one that's just been sitting in a garage for 20 years collection dust.
I couldn’t find a small truck so I bought an older minivan to haul lumber, furniture, pine straw, etc. side doors slide back, hatch door huge. I just couldn’t get stuff out of truck without climbing into bed. Then you can put seat up and haul 6 passengers. Makes a great camper.
Am I crazy or were the seats on the Sienna very uncomfortable? Odyseey felt more comfortable and drove better.
We had a 1980 TC3 but with the first child upgraded to a 1983 Kcar wagon, special order with a 5-speed. Both were great cars but underpowered.
I had a VW Rabbit and I loved the car. It was fun to drive and more room than you expected.
I bought one new in black. Was a lot of fun to drive!! Biggest problem was with the speedometer cable….pumped fluid into the instrument cluster and dripped onto the mat. A real bummer, dealer couldn’t fix it. No wonder Suzuki left the US.
More of a blend of retro hatchback and modern crossover.
Dodge is into retro designs, they should bring back the Omni. I owned an 81 model and it was a good little car. Cheap to buy and cheap to operate. I got over 270,000 miles out of it in the decade I owned it.
I'm sad to see this too. I look back to the era in the middle of the last century and lament how much the industry has changed. I can't imagine having my pick of a dozen or so midsize or full size cars made by American companies who are actually trying to make a good, stylish product (note: EVs are not even a consideration for me, so Tesla doesn't count). I've been saying for a few years I wish the Malibu had been built on the same platform as the CT5. Can you imagine a mid size RWD Chevrolet sedan with available AWD and 180+ hp? I feel like that would sell like crazy.
I think there's probably some validity to the trend you're seeing due to the likely age of car designers, but I've been taking it as a move toward more truck-like design rather than road-car design. As sedans and coupes are becoming more and more rare, I think the "fashion" is to make things more squared off and rugged looking.
Yes, but I also see it as a reaction to the SUV craze.
A couple of important things you missed. They invented the SUV and they replaced all those faulty engines, that's what broke them actually.
The 90s were reminiscent of the 30s and 40s, jelly bean, all curves no lines. 2000s and 2010s were reminiscent of the 50s and 60s, round with straight lines and occasionally ridiculous and retro designs (nissan juke, thing is funky looking. Mini cooper, beetle, retro styled mustang and camaro). Today is a mix of the 70s and 80s. Boring, cheap, and angular. (Funnily enough the boring exterior designs are actually pretty cool to see.) When I see an Ioniq 5, I see the square lights of the 80s but the perfectly straight creases and sharp lines of the mid to late 70s. Car design trends have historically changed in the middle of the decade, not at the beginning or end so what we are seeing now is really more like 1975~1986 styling.
Lincolns are just overpriced Fords.
The only thing that is funny about all this b***s*** is how stupid these government and automotive co- conspirators think the average America consumer really is.Jon's car con story is a no-sale here. All these car manufacturers have accomplished is condemn themselves to the one and done category .
How i get that pdf information
I’m about to pick up my second Malibu (2024). I love the car & am very disappointed that they have decided to cancel it
Thanks so much, you have helped my research exponentially!!
The fixed the miserable fuel system, added some air bags , made it a decent car and discontinued it lol!
The Fiero was a story of "what could have been"...it was a tiny, mid-engine, sports car that was just done wrong. It wasn't the hottest car around, and it wasn't for everyone, but it could have been a huge hit, with a longer run in the market. The whole "Fieros catching fire" thing pretty much killed it. Just another of GM's misses in the 80s and 90s.
No, they did not modify the suspension of the vehicles. Consumer Reports just changed their attitude.
The US team modified the suspension relative to the European version. After the CR report, they modified the steering.
